Vision: 21st-century literacy

Imagine the situation: you are in a restaurant, and your companion begins to suffocate, a picture from the film pops into your head, and you rush to the rescue with the Heimlich. Everything ends well: the other person is saved, and you are now a hero. That would always be in real life; you could use a peek in the movies — then an effective solution to complex problems would come to mind much faster …

But that’s what it’s all about! Of course, we can not always easily repeat what we have seen a couple of times on the screen, but with the proper training and thoughtful analysis of, this “superpower” can be acquired.

What is a heads-up?

In short, a vision is a visual experience set of a person. This phenomenon has not yet been extensively described and studied, as it has only recently been noted in the professional environment. However, no collection of tips for people working with the visuals cannot be imagined without mentioning it now. Some experts say it is a skill, while others compare observation with an acquired sense of taste, and aesthetics.

Masaru Ibuka, the co-founder of Sony Corporation and creator of pioneering concepts in early childhood education and training, has identified two primary activities that influence a child’s development until the age of 5 — communication with parents and impressions.

Children grow up and become adults, but how we develop doesn’t change — copying remains. We don’t do it as actively anymore. But we look around and bring what we see into our lives.

It is commonly believed that being observant is a skill for visual content creators: stylists, designers, photographers, and in extreme cases — storytellers and copywriters. But in fact, we can safely say that foresight can be applied to the everyday life of any person (for example, which images to choose for the new season or how to decorate the kitchen).

And if we look at the concept more broadly, we can assume that the thrifty can be applied to any profession, from engineer to event organizer.

We think you have noticed the similarity of the word with readiness (it is by analogy that it was created, though it is not yet in official dictionaries). Generally, we can say that a person who has seen a lot of quality visual content in life has a high degree of familiarity. But, as with books, it is not enough to see something; it is also essential to understand it.

Hindsight is not only a visual experience but also an analytical one. One learns to apply examples of color, typography, and other solutions and then develops “visual literacy.”

Why develop visual literacy?

If we talk about insight not just for photographers and designers, we can list quite a few advantages too:

  • For example, a person with good visual experience will look appealing to others, which often plays into the hands of others.
  • By learning to “see properly,” a person can combat visual noise around them — avoiding it and eliminating it.
  • People observed are likely more cultured because they have a more developed visual culture.
  • It is more difficult for a person who has been seen to fall into the hands of fraudsters. After all, even in order, for example, to hire a good designer, he must be distinguished from the rest and set a task. And for this, you need to have at least minimal visual experience.
  • If one adheres to the idea that a good eye (as a set of good examples) is a broad outlook, then developing it can help everyone become more professional in their field and more successful in life.

How do you develop a vision?

Collecting examples

The first logical step would be to “hunt” for references and sources of inspiration. You need to gather an initial list of relevant websites, social media accounts, and locations in the city that can help you. You can start with those that you understand and like, and then gradually widen the circle. It is worthwhile not only to run through the items superficially but also to look systematically for updates.

It’s important to note that visits to museums, exhibitions, or nature trips will also come in handy during this step. And even movies and video games can help you. The more you can see things that leave a vivid impression inside you, the easier it will be to develop your sense of beauty.

Organize what you collect

An essential part of collecting examples is creating your system for storing them. Normal browsing will only give half the success, and everything you see needs to be held not only in your memory but also on your whiteboards or in folders by category. Otherwise, the phrase “I’ve seen the right one somewhere” will become your eternal companion.

“Colours,” “want to repeat,” “unusual solution,” “inspiring,” and “suitable for a project” are examples of categories by which you can sort. It is, of course, worth taking the time to apply what you see. And if you are working on a skill for general development, you can save not the examples themselves but, for example, only your impressions of them and your brief conclusions.

Analyze the examples

Here is the primary step for practicing observation. Please note that analysis is not just deciding that something is good and something is wrong. If you can look at a design and understand why it works (or doesn’t work), you’ll be much better equipped to implement new ideas in your work.

Finding the essential little things, taking apart the details, looking for necessary changes, and concluding — this is the kind of work you should do with every example. Whether good or bad, every one of them will only be helpful after careful parsing.

Every day you can take a couple of references and take them apart:

  • what makes them stand out;
  • what elements catch their eye: color, composition, fonts, or characters;
  • what’s in them that catches your eye;
  • what emotions the image evokes and why;
  • which colors are represented;
  • what associations the combination evokes;
  • how to adapt the idea to the project.
